Landscape Projects were commissioned in 2008 to design a new courtyard within the college campus in a space created by a programme of new build and demolition works by the estates Department and the construction of a new performing arts building.
The design sought to offer students a variety of both active and tranquil spaces that could be used for socialising, working or quiet contemplation. Both staff and students were closely involved in the design process as approval for each stage of work was sought from a steering group. Requests for features such as additional seating, natural planting schemes, covered walkways and lighting were incorporated into the final design. Various presentations were made by Landscape Projects during the commission.
The design consists of a quiet memorial garden incorporating an historic memorial stone from the chapel which previously occupied the site, a timber boardwalk which acts as the main social space at the heart of the courtyard where silver birch trees and sail shades offer shelter to seats and benches, a pebble ‘beach’ garden overlooked by the boardwalk with groundcover planting, native trees and a large canopy which covers the entrance into the courtyard from the main college building.
