Landscape Projects were commissioned to undertake the renewal of the Long Lane Estate in Bolton for William Sutton Trust. The estate was built in the 1970’s and was in need of an upgrade: planting had overgrown, boundaries had fallen into disrepair, and anti social activities were affecting perceptions of the area.
Estate renewal programmes provide the opportunity to bring tired, “municipal-style” landscapes up to date, through improvements to greenspace, car parking, play provision and the creation of attractive social landscapes. Working closely with the residents group, we devised a plan which recognised the different character areas within the estate, and their different problems. This enabled us to identify sensitive treatments which responded to local requirements, while keeping the overall identity of the estate consistent. The resulting implementation plan has been delivered over a 4 year programme of works, with completion in 2007.
The intensive consultation process identified projects including fencing renewal, replacement planting, access for disabled and new car park areas.
